Naturopathic Physicians in Primary Care

Naturopathic physicians are family doctors with a specialty in natural therapeutics. They have the diagnostic abilities of conventional medical doctors but, in addition to ordering lab work, specialty labs, and performing physical exams, they listen to you and help you to get better – for good. Imagine having a 1-2 hour initial visit and a 45-90 minute follow up with your primary care doctor. While these time ranges may differ slightly from doctor to doctor, naturopathic physicians see fewer people each day so they can take time to be present with, and listen to, each patient. During these extended visits, not only will you learn what is happening in your body and what to do or take in order to heal, by why.

Our approach

Your naturopathic physician’s focus is to understand what natural, physiological processes are out of balance and are causing the signs and symptoms you’re experiencing. This is the focus of root-cause medicine. In supporting the innate intelligence of your body, together you’ll create a treatment plan towards a path of health and healing. They can help with quick symptom relief (i.e. sore throat, ear ache, common cold, food poisoning, pink eye, digestive upset) while guiding you through long term system-strengthening treatment plans. This often means that the need for conventional medications is reduced or eliminated and therefore, so are the side effects. It’s commonly noticed that naturopathic medicine can take longer when compared to conventional medicine. This is because your treatments are working with your body to improve and heal symptoms, rather than forcing your body to suppress and hide symptoms. If the disease process can’t be stopped, naturopathic medicine can generally slow the process and improve overall health. Naturopathic physicians prescribe conventional medications when absolutely necessary but are focused on “least invasive, most effective” therapies. They work in concert with MDs and other healthcare practitioners to share progress and refer when necessary. As primary care physicians, your naturopathic physician will hold your comprehensive medical record to provide a holistic central base for all of your health care needs.
