In East Asian Medicine, health is not viewed as something separate from the seasons. We are part of nature, and as
the world around us changes, our bodies and nervous systems respond as well.
One of the traditional practices that reflects this relationship is Yangsheng, often translated as “nourishing life.” Yangsheng is the art of supporting health through the choices we make every day—how we eat, rest, move, breathe, connect, and respond to the season we are in. Rather than waiting until something is wrong, it asks: What does my body need now to stay resilient?
This time of year offers a particularly meaningful opportunity to think about the Earth element.
The Earth Element: Grounding and Nourishment
In Chinese medicine, Earth is associated with nourishment, stability, digestion, and our ability to feel centered. It reminds us that health isn’t created through effort alone. We also need to be able to receive—food, rest, care, connection, and support.
When life becomes demanding, it can be easy to keep pushing forward while ignoring our own reserves. We may eat on the run, sleep less, carry more tension, or postpone the appointments that help us feel well.
Yangsheng offers another approach: support yourself before you are depleted.
That might mean returning to regular acupuncture, scheduling a massage, using the sauna, addressing an injury that has been lingering, or simply creating more space for sleep, nourishing meals, and quiet.
Healing Happens in Community
The idea of receiving support becomes especially important when we have experienced trauma, illness, surgery, loss, or prolonged stress.
Healing does not always happen by “getting over” what we’ve been through. Sometimes transformation happens when we have enough safety and support to allow the body to process what it has been carrying.
Acupuncture, massage, naturopathic medicine, chiropractic care, counseling, and other supportive therapies can each provide a different doorway into that process. Just as importantly, community itself can be part of healing. Being cared for, witnessed, and supported can help us reconnect with our bodies and with a sense of steadiness.
There is strength in knowing when we don’t have to do everything alone. And that support goes both ways.
At this moment, we need our community, too. As Glow moves forward and continues to heal, your support means more to us than you may realize. Every appointment you schedule, friend you refer, review you share, and kind word you offer helps sustain this community of care that we have built together.
For more than 25 years, Glow has been a place where people come to be cared for, supported, and welcomed. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue doing this work—and we truly couldn’t do it without you.
In many ways, this is Yangsheng too: recognizing that nourishment flows in both directions, and that when we care for one another, the whole community becomes stronger.
Use the Support You Already Have
As we move toward the end of the year, this is also a practical time to look at your remaining health insurance benefits.
Many insurance plans reset in January, which means unused acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, naturopathic, or other covered benefits may not carry over into the new year. If you have been postponing care, now is a good time to check your benefits and make appointments for the remaining months of the year.
And because end-of-year schedules tend to fill quickly, we encourage you to plan ahead.
Nourish What You Want to Carry Forward
Seasonal alignment doesn’t require a dramatic wellness overhaul. Yangsheng teaches us that health is cultivated through small, repeated acts of nourishment.
Eat well. Rest. Move your body. Ask for help. Receive care. Tend to what hurts. Stay connected to your community.
The Earth element reminds us that being supported is not separate from being strong. Sometimes it is precisely what allows us to become stronger.
As the year begins to draw toward its close, consider what you have been carrying—and what you might be ready to set down. We are here to support you, wherever you are in that process.
