Surgery may be the end of one chapter of treatment, but it is often just the beginning of the healing process. As the
body repairs itself, patients may experience swelling, bruising, stiffness, tenderness, scar tissue, restricted movement, or changes in sensation around the surgical area.
And healing doesn’t always end when the incision closes. Older scars can sometimes remain tight, tender, numb, sensitive, raised, or adhered to deeper tissues months or even years after surgery.
At Glow Natural Health Center, we offer several therapies that can support both postoperative recovery and the treatment of older surgical scars, including acupuncture, low-level laser therapy, scar injection therapy, massage, and cupping.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be used throughout different stages of recovery to help manage pain, reduce muscle tension, support circulation, and address swelling or restricted movement.
Early in recovery, treatment doesn’t necessarily mean placing needles near a recent incision. Acupuncture points elsewhere on the body can be selected while the surgical area is protected. Later, more localized treatment may help address lingering pain, altered sensation, muscle guarding, and restriction surrounding an older scar.
Low-Level Laser Therapy
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also called cold laser or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular processes involved in tissue repair.
This gentle, noninvasive therapy may be incorporated into postoperative care to support tissue healing and decrease inflammation and discomfort. It can also be used later in the healing process as part of a treatment plan for persistent scar-related symptoms.
Because it requires no needles or manual pressure, laser therapy can be especially useful when an area is still too sensitive for hands-on techniques.
Scar Injection Therapy
A scar continues remodeling long after an incision has closed. In some people, scar tissue can remain tight, tender, thickened, adhered to deeper tissues, or uncomfortable.
For appropriate patients, scar injection therapy can be used as part of a broader scar-treatment plan. Small injections are placed in or around fully healed scar tissue with the goal of improving tissue mobility, sensitivity, and comfort.
This treatment can be considered not only for newer scars but also for older surgical scars that continue to cause symptoms.
Therapeutic Massage
Massage can play an important role as the body moves from initial healing into rehabilitation. Postoperative massage may help address muscle guarding and tension, improve circulation, support mobility, and gently work with areas of restricted tissue.
Once an incision is fully healed, more focused scar and fascial techniques can be used to encourage better movement between the layers of skin, fascia, and underlying tissue. This can be helpful even when a scar is years old.
Cupping
Once tissues have healed enough to tolerate it, cupping may be another useful tool for scar and fascial restriction.
Rather than applying downward pressure, cups create gentle suction that lifts the skin and superficial connective tissues. This can help address restricted tissue mobility, adhesions, and muscle tension surrounding a healed surgical area.
New Scar or Old Scar: When Should You Seek Treatment?
You don’t necessarily need to wait until a scar becomes a problem to support recovery. Treatment can begin at different stages after surgery, depending on the procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations.
But it’s also not too late to address an old scar. Consider an evaluation if a surgical area remains painful, tight, numb, sensitive, raised, restricted, or seems to affect how you move—even if the surgery happened months or years ago.
Because surgery can affect circulation, sensation, muscles, fascia, and multiple layers of tissue, we often combine therapies. A patient might receive acupuncture and laser therapy earlier in recovery, followed by massage, cupping, or scar injection therapy as healing progresses.
Whether you’re preparing for surgery, recently had a procedure, or have an older scar that has never felt quite right, we can help determine which therapies may be appropriate for you.
